Crab Orchard Falls Trail is a multi-layer waterfall located on the property of Valle Crucis Conference Center and Holy Cross Church. This short hike is open to the public and is 5 minutes from the historic Mast General Store in the heart of Valle Crucis. The hike is only 15 minutes from downtown Boone, NC.

Things to Do Near Valle Crucis & Crab Orchard Falls

You’ll want to take the time to check out the town of Valle Crucis. The rural historic district was the first in the state of North Carolina. Grab an amazing sandwich at the Ham Shoppe, just across the street from Mast Store. Take your sandwich with you to enjoy a picnic beside the falls. Once you arrive at Holy Cross drive to the upper lot and you will see parking spaces labeled “Waterfall Hike” near the dinner bell!

The High Country of North Carolina is well-known for it’s beautiful hiking regions. To get to Crab Orchard Falls Trail, you will walk up the gravel drive around Johnson Hall to the trail head. This intermediate hike may only be 1.5 miles round trip, but is still a great workout due to the grade of the trail. When you begin the trail you are at 2,785’ in elevation and within 4/10 of a mile you are at 3110’ in elevation. A beautiful trail through the woods takes you to an amazing waterfall. There are pools and eddies over a series of boulders with an awesome swimming hole. You can hike down the boulders and even sit under a smaller fall below. The hike out is a breeze, as it is all downhill!
