History of the Hounds Ear Club

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina between the resort towns of Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk, Hound Ears Club is a family-oriented mountain community established in 1964. 

Boasting a gorgeous 860 acres, the Hound Ears community is known for its casual elegance and authentic charm. The beautiful Hound Ears shows off the area's natural beauty and offers multiple amenities, such as an 18-hole golf course, fly fishing, hiking, tennis courts, pickleball courts, swimming, dining, and a fitness center, including multiple social events.

How it began ...

In the 1960s, tourists began to visit the High Country to enjoy the cool summers and snow-filled winters to access ski resorts. The Robbins brothers, Grover, Harry, and Spencer, believed that a Bavarian-style resort that included both a golf course and a ski slope would be a perfect addition to the area's growing tourism industry.

Hound Ears Club's journey from vacant farmland to world-class Club started in 1962 on the site of the lumber town of Shulls Mill. In years prior, Shulls Mill was the largest town in Watauga County and a railroad hub for the Eastern Tennessee & Western North Carolina line, also known as Tweetsie.

The Robbins brothers opened Hound Ears Golf and Ski Club in January 1964 and turned to renowned architect Claus Moberg to design the Bavarian-style Clubhouse, lodge, and several chalets and homes within Hound Ears. George Cobb, one of the 20th century's most prolific golf course designers and the architect of the Par-3 Course at Augusta National Golf Club, built the club's present-day golf course. 

Although the community and amenities have grown and changed over the years, Hound Ears Club still continues to maintian the casual elegance, authentic charm, and natural beauty the Robbins brothers hoped and dreamed it to be over 60 years ago.
